Sleep appears first in the creation story of Genesis 2:21-3 when God “took one of the man’s ribs and closed up its place with flesh.” This passage not only introduces us to the concept of sleep but also serves as an example of how God can provide physical rest for his people. In Psalm 127:2, we are reminded that without sleep our work is meaningless and vanity; even if we labor hard throughout the day, if we don’t get adequate rest at night our efforts will be fruitless.

While it’s true that most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each night, it appears that anything beyond this amount may do more harm than good.

Researchers show that prolonged periods of sleep can reduce healthy metabolic activity. This can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. It doesn’t appear to matter if the person sleeps at multiple intervals throughout the day or has one long stretch at night. Any time spent in bed beyond the recommended amount can potentially pose risks. Additionally, some studies have associated excess sleep with depression and anxiety.

There is some concern with sleeping as well. The Bible stresses that we should not abuse sleep and give in to laziness.

How Many Hours Should You Sleep?

Getting enough quality sleep is a key part of living a healthy life. It’s important to find the right balance in order to maintain your physical and mental well-being. Knowing how many hours you should be sleeping each night can help you make sure that you are getting the rest that your body needs.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults aged 18-64 get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, while those over 65 should aim for 7-8 hours per night. However, everyone has different needs and factors such as work schedules and lifestyle can affect how much rest an individual requires. I have been blessed with the ability to fall asleep pretty much anywhere and at any time. My wife is not so lucky. Here are a few tips that will turn your sleepless nights into nights of peaceful sleep.

Reduce blue light exposure.

You think you are relaxing by watching tv or checking your Instagram feed (follow me @Tyler_Inloes) but you are not. The heavy blue light screens give off gives your eyes the feeling of daylight. This causes you a hard time falling asleep.

Cut caffeine and sugar late in the day.

This one seems obvious but you would be amazed at how many people have regular coffee after 5 pm. You might also want to rethink that ice cream you eat in bed while watching a movie.

Sleep and wake up at a regular consistent time.

I understand that your work schedule might not allow you to try hard to do this one. Your body loves structure. Getting up and going to bed at the same time lets your body not have to guess how to use your stored energy.

Don’t Drink, and sleep  (Alcohol).

Yes, alcohol might help you fall asleep but it does not help with the quality.

Set Your Bedroom Temperature to around 70F.

This might be the thing that affects my sleep the most. If it is hot there is no way I am getting a good night’s sleep.

Watch your eyelids.

If you have tried all of the items above and still are having a hard time sleeping, watch your eyelids. I know it sounds funny but any time I am having a hard time falling asleep, the second I start looking at the back of my eyelids I am out cold. Honestly, it takes less than like 5 minutes.
